PHILOSOPHY AND CULTURE IN MODERN MEXICO John Haddox, Ph.D.
In the works of the "Founding Philosophical Fathers," José Vasconcelos and Antonio Caso, Dr. Haddox helps us envision a historical setting for this series. Then, in the writings of Samuel Rámos, Leopoldo Zea and Octavio Paz, students will examine the "Continuing Search for Identity" with focus on literary luminaries Paz and the contemporary Carlos Fuentes. Personalities of "Artistic Greatness" Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orózco and "Continuing Beauties" David Alfaro Siqueiros, Rufino Tamayo and Frída Kahlo, will round out this traversal of our southern neighbors’ modern cultural heritage.

QUESTION: Which of the following does not belong on this list? Cerro de Cristo Rey, the Franklin Mountains, Sierra de Juarez, the West Potrillos.
ANSWER; None. They are all mountains in our desert Southwest area. And they are among the subjects for our classroom hike with Dr. Cornell which will also include a major dinosaur track site, a billion-year-old beach, the Rio Grande Rift, Lake Cabesa de Vaca and Kilbourne’s Hole. Along the way, expect to explore 500 million years of fossiliferous rocks, and major faults. All these features are parts of El Paso’s geologic past, to be discovered in this class.

"LET ME TELL YOU A STORY…." ; Fiction and the Critical Reader
Lawrence Johnson, Ph.D. and Robert Wren, Ph.D.
Dr.s Johnson and Wren will host a discussion on the elements that define the modern reading experience using four contemporary works to spark the discussion. The four novels are October Light, by John Gardner, Master and Commander by Patrick O’Brien, Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry, and The Spy Who Came in from the Cold by John Le Carre. These books run the gamut from a book about reading a novel (October Light), to a spy thriller, from naval adventure in the age of Nelson to a cattle drive in the American West.
