Training and Education

To access education/training materials see the last section of this page entitled "Education and Training Materials".

There are many resources available for you to learn how to effectively use computing to facilitate your research. As part of the University of Texas System, through investments associated with the University of Texas Research Cyberinfrastructure (UTRC) initiative, UTEP faculty, students, and staff have access to education, training, and consulting provided by the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC). These services are available through in-person workshops either at TACC or UTEP, webcast, and on-line videos, presentations, and documentation.

            • To see what workshops are scheduled for the future, click here

            • To access related videos and presentations, click here

• And, to access on-line documentation about running jobs on UTRC’s Lonestar 4 system at TACC, click here

• Note that if there are ten or more UTEP faculty, students, or staff who are interested in having a particular in-person workshop at UTEP, this can be arranged – contact Pat Teller (pteller@utep.edu) if you are interested in this.

In addition, education and training opportunities as well as on-line educational/training materials are provided by XSEDE, eXtreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment.

            • To examine XSEDE’s education/training calendar, click here

            • To access videos and slides from presentations by XSEDE's Extended Collaborative Support  (ECSS) program, click here

            • And, to access on-line documentation about XSEDE’s many computing resources, click here.

Education and Training Materials

There are many sources of education and training materials, including on-line tutorials, related to high performance computing. Below are a few.

Recent Course Materials used by the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC), including those used at the XSEDE Regional Workshop held at UTEP on February 19-20, 2013, can be found at http://www.tacc.utexas.edu/user-services/training/course-materials. Included here are course materials associated with courses entitled: "Optimize your Code for the Intel Xeon Phi", "Parallel Computing on Stampede", "Introduction to Parallel Computing", "Introduction to MPI and OpenMP", "Introduction to CUDA for HPC", "C Programming", "Linix/Unix Basics", etc.

XSEDE's Online Training Materials can be accessed at https://www.xsede.org/web/xup/online-training. These materials include Cornell Virtual Workshops, CI-Tutor materials (see below), and FutureGrid training on Cloud Computing -- "Using Nimbus", "Using Eucalyptus" -- and "Using MyHadoop". The Cornell Virtual Workshops, which also can be accessed via https://www.cac.cornell.edu/VW/default.aspx, include tutorials for "MATLAB Programming", "Python for High Performance", and much more.

NCSA's Cyberinfrastructure Tutor (CI-TUTOR) at http://www.citutor.org/browse.php?category=12&search=&include=all&access=&filter=Filter provides on-line courses related to the Access Grid, Gateways, Parallel Computing, Parallel I/O, Performance Tuning, Petascale Computing, Scientific Visualization, and XSEDE Cybersecurity.
