Information Security

ALERT:  UTEP employees will never ask you for your PASSWORD; neither will any reputable banking institution or company.  Do not fall pray to phishing scams.

Information Security is everyone's responsibility. With the growing number of security breaches and incidents across the world, securing confidential and proprietary information is getting more difficult and more expensive. For most businesses and organizations, investment in information security has risen dramatically in an attempt to thwart would-be attackers. UTEP is no exception.

Information Technology is working on an aggressive plan to implement more strict security measures across campus; and unfortunately some of these will require some level of disruption on campus, but we hope to minimize the inconvenience to everyone.

Please visit this page regularly over the next several months to keep up with the latest information regarding our implementation of enhanced security measures. We will try our best to keep you informed so that you can take appropriate steps without disrupting your day to day activities.

Special Bulletin - 05/21/2008 Minimize

Sharing or Downloading of Unauthorized Copyrighted Material

Approved by Ken Pierce, UTEP Chief Information Officer

The Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) and other related industries occasionally send notices to UTEP on potential copyright infringements. There has recently been a significant increase in the number of these incidents being sent to UTEP. The Information Security Office (ISO) would like to remind everyone that utilizing university resources for the purposes of sharing or downloading unauthorized copyrighted files is in direct violation of University information resource policies, and individuals may be subject to loss of UTEP Information Resource access privileges, and may include civil and criminal penalties for copyright infringement.

If anyone is found to be using file sharing programs to illegally share or download movies, music or games, they can lose their internet access (including e-mail) at the University permanently.  Additionally, violation of these policies may result in disciplinary action for employees and students, including termination of employment, suspension and/or expulsion.

For more information, please follow these links to view Section 6 - Unacceptable Use of university resources from the Information Security Policy Manual.  Additional information may be found on the Information Security Office web page as well.

File Sharing Minimize
File sharing through networks like LimeWire, Kazaa, BearShare and Gnutella is illegal, and is an infringement upon copyrights. It is important to know that these programs are often laced with spyware and also open up your computer to the Internet. If you are caught using a file sharing program to share or download movies, music, or games you can lose your Internet access (including your e-mail) at the University permanently. You can visit the RIAA Website for more information about file sharing or e-mail security@utep.edu with any additional questions.
